If you love nature and want to start hiking with your kids, the Sunshine Coast has plenty of easy hikes and nature trails that are ideal for toddlers and young children. We love spending time outdoors—and my kids have been hiking on these trails since they were small. Whether you’re local or visiting, hiking is a great way to explore the coast, burn off some energy, and create beautiful memories with your family.
If you’re hiking with toddlers, remember to bring plenty of snacks, water, and a lightweight carrier or backpack. Here are some of our favorite easy hikes on the Sunshine Coast that are perfect for families.
Top Easy Hikes for Families on the Sunshine Coast

Buderim Forest Park (Buderim Falls)
This lush rainforest walk is a hit with families. It features a stunning waterfall, shaded trails, and facilities like toilets and picnic tables at both entrances. You can access a pram-friendly path from Harry’s Lane off Lindsay Road, but note that the full trail to the waterfall includes stairs and is not suitable for prams. It can get muddy after rain—bring extra clothes just in case.
Noosa National Park Coastal Walk
This scenic coastal path is pram and beach wagon-friendly, making it ideal for families with young kids. You might even spot a koala along the trail! The ocean views are incredible, and there are plenty of rest stops for snacks or a beach break.
Tip: Start from the main car park and walk as far as you feel comfortable—then turn back when the kids get tired.
Kondalila Falls (Montville)
Located in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Kondalila Falls offers a peaceful forest setting with several walking tracks. The short trail to the rock pool is suitable for kids who enjoy a bit of a challenge, and it leads to a refreshing swim spot. Avoid taking a pram—it’s better for confident walkers or kids in carriers.
Mount Coolum
While I wouldn’t consider Mount Coolum an easy hike for toddlers, it is doable with little ones if you take your time. The path is steep and rocky but the panoramic views from the top are stunning!
Bring lots of water, sun protection, and prepare for a slow, steady climb.
Note: Best attempted with older kids or plan on bringing the little ones in a carrier.

Buderim Palmwoods Heritage Tramway (Buderim)
This scenic 4 km return walk is perfect for all ages and pram-friendly, with plenty of shade along the way. I brought the kids’ bikes, which started off well, but they got tired on the way back—so I ended up carrying them! Lesson learned—we’ll probably just walk next time. Overall, it’s a lovely trail for families looking to spend some time outdoors.
EJ Foote Sanctuary – Botanic Garden Loop (Buderim)
A peaceful walk with beautiful native plants and an easy 20-minute loop that’s perfect for toddlers. Pack bug spray and enjoy a family picnic in the grassy areas.
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (Maleny)
Located in the hinterland, this pram-friendly rainforest walk is a must-visit for families. There’s a great cafe, a nature discovery centre for the kids, and a stunning view of the Glass House Mountains.
Tips for Hiking with Kids
- Pack snacks and water: Keep them happy with their favorite snacks.
- Dress for the weather: Hats, sunscreen, and lightweight jackets are essentials. Layers work best.
- Start early or go late: Avoid the midday heat and keep hikes short to match your child’s comfort level.
- Use a baby carrier: If you have a toddler who tires easily, a carrier is a lifesaver.
- Make it fun: Spot animals, pick up leaves, or let them bring a small backpack with binoculars or a magnifying glass for exploring.
What to Pack for a Family Hike
- A small backpack with water and snacks
- Wet wipes and bandaids for any scrapes or spills
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- Hats and a lightweight jacket
- First aid kit (I keep one in the car just in case)
- Comfortable walking shoes for both you and your little ones
