Road to Hana

When I asked people what I should do when I got to Maui, I heard mixed reviews when it came to the Road to Hana. Some people said it was a must see, while others said to skip it because it gets too crowded.

I’m told it takes about 10 hours to get to Hana, on a long two-lane windy road. Driving here can be tricky because there are also bridges that only allow one lane of traffic at a time, so you have to wait for other cars to pass before you can go.

We never made it all the way to Hana. Apparently most people don’t either, because they make several stops to check out the hundreds of waterfalls on the way.

Here’s our journey!

Do you recognize that large prickly fruit? That’s what they use to make Juicy fruit gum!

The lady at the fruit stand told us where we could find waterfalls that wouldn’t be as packed. We stopped on the side of the road, where we thought she told us to go…only to discover we were walking to someone’s house!

We walked up the driveway, and finally realized we were definitely going in the wrong direction!

Now we’re talking! Check out the bamboo trail

Most of the trail looked like this, but don’t let this picture fool you! It wasn’t all breezy.

In my opinion, climbing up the rock wall is scarier than going down.

Chris will tell you, flip flops are not the best idea!

There are four waterfalls on this trail, and we had to climb on smaller rocks just like these ones to get to the 3rd one. This is about the time I started to think, it’s time to turn around. (I was getting blisters on my feet, and I was hungry.) Did I mention to get to the last two waterfalls, you had to swim about 100 yards to get to the rest of the trail. Yeah, that’s when I called it quits.

We did make it to waterfalls 1 and 2!!

Nice pictures. That’s a tough drive. My wife and I turned back after it started raining.
