Ventura County, California is in a state of emergency. 272,000 acres have burned in the Thomas Fire since Monday night. Families have lost their homes, animals have been displaced, and our community has been coming together to drop off donations and offer support to help people impacted by the fire. I grew up in Ventura County and like you; I want to do what I can to provide support.
Here are ways you can help:
If you want to donate something, consider a gift card to help families in the long term. I have seen a lot of water, toiletries, diapers, pet food, used clothes and blankets but a gift card goes a long way to help people buy what they really need.
Visit a local animal shelter to help lost pets or animals waiting to be adopted.
United Way of Ventura County has a Thomas Fire Fund – use their mobile app link to donate. – https://app.mobilecause.com/f/hjr/n
(The website was so busy it crashed, but the mobile link works.)
THANK A FIREFIGHTER
Write a thank you letter to a firefighter and mail it to any Ventura County or Southern California fire station. They have been working nonstop to put out these flames, and I’m sure they would appreciate your support! Visit @thankafirefighter on Instagram.
Skip the chain stores and restaurants. Shop, eat and buy local. Business owners have lost business during this typically very busy season. Please consider making a conscious effort to do your holiday shopping and dining at locally owned and operated retailers, restaurants, coffee shops, etc.
If you can think of another way to help, let me know, and I would love to add it to the list. Several fires are burning throughout Southern California, and we have to look out for each other.
