Comuna 13 – Medellin, Colombia

Graffiti tour

Comuna 13 Medellin, Colombia

Colombia keeps surprising me with it’s magic and diverse landscapes.  I spent a few weeks on the Caribbean coast, explored Bonda and truly felt connected to nature at Tayrona National Natural Park.  After a quick plane ride from Santa Marta, I arrived in Medellin and took a bus into the city.

Comuna 13

I heard a lot about Comuna 13, a neighborhood in Medellin and was really excited to check out the graffiti-filled walls.  My friend Dani from Switzerland and I met our guide at the San Javier Metro Stop at 2 pm for the Spanish tour. The art along the steep hillside is colorful and features faces of women and animals, which according to our guide is what the community requested.  There are several outdoor escalators to help you get to the top and plenty of shops where you can buy something to eat.  The coconut ice cream at Cremas Doña Alba was delicious. The employees were so friendly, and they even took a picture of our group that you can see here.

The Comuna 13 tour lasts a little over two hours, and you’ll learn a lot about the history of the area and how the neighborhood has overcome its violent past over the years.  Once you get to the top of the escaleras (escalators), there is a path you can walk along to see more murals and beautiful views of the city below.

Medellin

I spent my first night in the northern part of the city, and the next day moved to El Poblado which is where most tourists stay. This city has a convenient metro that is easy to navigate and costs less than a $1 US per ride.  The parks have free Wi-Fi and ride-sharing apps like Uber are also available to help you get around.  You can explore the city on your own, but there are also plenty of free walking tours with guides in both English and Spanish.

I can’t wait to explore more of this beautiful city and country!
