Swimming with Sharks in Hawaii

Swimming with Sharks in Hawaii

Out of all the hikes, all the beautiful beaches, and all the adventures… swimming with sharks in Hawaii is on the top of my favorites list.  The water was crystal clear and a deep dark blue.   The boat ride was calm, quick and when we got to our destination just a few miles off Haleiwa, we were greeted by 36 Galapagos sharks circling around the boat.  So breathtaking!

I went with my cousin Daniela from Ecuador, who had only used a mask and fins once before earlier that week. We met the One Ocean Diving crew at the Haleiwa Boat Harbor on the North Shore of Oahu.  During the 15 minute boat ride, they gave us an education lesson about sharks, explained their behaviors and talked about the conservation efforts.

They also explained how to safely swim around the sharks and what the experience would be like when we entered the water without a cage.  I would definitely do this again.  Would you? Have you ever swam with sharks? I can’t wait to hear about your experience.

The whole trip was about 2 hours and cost $150 per person.  Kamaaina rates are also available.

Travel Tip: I always get cold, bring a wetsuit and your GoPro.
